Dismayed over the clarification made by “Project ORCHID” regarding mandatory 100% HIV testing for drug users, the North East India Drug Users Forum issued an open letter to “Project ORCHID” director, Dr. Langkham on Sunday. NEIDUF president, Abou Mere, said the clarification issued by “Project ORCHID” did not give reference to its office e-mail sent on May 11. It questioned whether AVAHAN, NACO have issued statement to make mandatory testing annually or “Project ORCHID” was “misusing” the organization’s name. Alleging that the project was trying to justify the matter as an internal communication, Mere said the message was still an official communication which said “100% HIV mandatory testing” and also asked if the office was in denial of sending the “controversial” mail.
Meanwhile, MUN and NMP+ have expressed support for NEIDUF, NDUN and NNP+ in opposing Project ORCHID’s move to conduct 100% HIV testing among drugs users in its targeted intervention area.
They opined mandatory testing was in violation of human rights and condemned the move while urging the government to intervene.
