Students of the Institute of Communication and Information Technology (ICIT) Monday staged a protest at their campus against alleged shortage of lecturers at the institute besides various difficulties and problems being faced by them.
As part of their protest, the students locked the main building, boycotted classes and held placards some of which read “Shortage of lecturers”, “We need lab assistants”, “Clean drinking water at Hostel”, “We want Net Connection” etc. Students said they decided to lodge their protest in this manner as the authorities did not look into their grievances even after repeated appeals.
Later in the day, representatives from the directorate of technical education Kohima led by a deputy director and the controller of exam reached the institute and held meeting with the students who submitted a memorandum addressed to the director technical education.
In the memorandum, the students alleged that the ICIT, since its inception has been facing acute shortage of teaching faculty and staff for which it added that several representations were submitted. They also alleged that some of the papers of 6th and 4th semesters were yet to start while the end semester exams have been scheduled on June 2, 2010. They mentioned about the shortage of class rooms as a result of which classes were held alternatively and the immediate need for laboratories with proper equipments and computers attached for all the departments.
Along with the memorandum was attached another copy of demand/requirement which included construction of auditorium, lab equipments, internet connections, lab assistants, 1 computer per student, shortage of books in library, playground for sports activities, medical assistance with ambulance, revision of current syllabus, recruitment of permanent qualified teachers, black topping of the road leading to the institute, appointment of warden for each hostel, separate hostel for boys & girls, proper drinking facilities etc.
The meeting between the students and the directorate officials concluded with the understanding that immediate need/requirement of the Institute regarding shortage of lecturers would be looked into it by the authority. Some sort of arrangement would be made by May 30 regarding the shortage of lecturers failing which the students decided to take their own course of action.
The meeting also decided that normal classes would be resumed by Wednesday.
