A 17-year-old girl hanged herself at her Basirhat home on Tuesday afternoon after her schoolteachers accused her of indecent behaviour and having an affair with a school mate. Muktendu Sekhar Mondal, the headmaster, and teachers Ashish Mondal and Debendranath Mistri were arrested after a complaint lodged by the girl’s family.
Uma Mondal was a class XII student of Gobindokhati Siksha Niketan in Basirhat. Uma and her friend and classmate Benoy Mondal both stayed in the school hostel, which had separate wings for boys and girls. Though Uma’s home is in Basirhat’s Dakshinpara locality, her parents put her up in the hostel as her classes began very early. Benoy hails from Jogeshganj in Hasnabad.
Though boys and girls are forbidden from stepping into each others’ hostel wings, Benoy went to the girls’ section to collect an exercise book from Uma around 7.30 am on Tuesday. As they were chatting in a room, some students locked up the room from outside and went off to class. The idea was to play a prank on them.
The two were locked up in the room for over an hour. Then a teacher asked where Uma and Benoy were, some students told him they were together in room of the girls’ hostel. Two teachers Ashish Mondal and Debendranath Mistri then went to the hostel around 9 am and found the room locked. One of the students claimed he had found the key to the lock and handed it to them.
On unlocking the room, the teachers found Benoy and Uma inside and severely reprimanded them. Both were then summoned by headmaster Muktendu Sekhar Mondal. The two teachers and the headmaster then rebuked the two of them, accusing them of having an affair and indecent behaviour.
The headmaster then called up both the parents of both. Once they arrived, he allegedly insulted them and said they had brought disrepute to the institution. Though Benoy and Uma were not expelled, they were sent home with their parents.
On reaching her Dakhshinpara home, Uma locked herself in a room and hanged herself on Tuesday afternoon.
Uma’s mother Sikha Mondal then filed a complaint at Basirhat police station against the headmaster and the two teachers, who were arrested late on Tuesday. Sikha said her daughter was mentally tortured by the headmaster and teachers. A police officer said the trio were being interrogated and had been charged under Section 306 of the IPC for driving Uma to suicide.
