Lahorijan, a small town located in Karbi Anglong, Assam bordering Nagaland. The national highway 36 leads to the golden triangles of international drugs smuggling through the state of Manipur. Lahorijan which is highly populated has population with varied community and social differences.
There is two side of the coin; there are people, who find it difficult to make ends meet while others gets involve in anti social elements to make fast money and the easiest way is through smuggling drugs and prostitution. Children in many circumstances are being forced in to peddle drugs initially and later become hardcore addict. There are families where both man and wife are hooked to drugs and it is very natural that their offspring will turn into an addict.
Prostitution too flourished as it is a transit camp for the truckers where young girls are lured to take it as a profession for easy money, drugs and prostitution.
According to the survey done by the Drug Abuse Information, Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre (DAIPARC) who have been working in the area for the last five years, has found a 13 year old girl infected with HIV. The report further suggests that the disease is spreading in an alarming rate.
According to DAIPARC survey out of every thousands, two to three are infected with HIV and AIDS.
The NGO (DAIPARC) has been trying to remove the stigma attached with HIV and AIDS and their efforts seems to be paying off as many are responding to the treatments.
