The Assam government today ordered restricting speed limit of vehicles passing through the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) to 40 kmph to ensure safety of the animals that are migrating to safe shelter in the higher reaches during the floods.
According to UNI, the government has imposed Section 144 CrPC, prohibiting speedy driving and restricting the speed limit of the moving vehicles to 40 kmph plying on NH-37 in KNP. It has also prohibited carrying of fire arms, bows, arrows and other lethal weapons and stoppage of heavy vehicles in front of eating joints and blowing of horn within the area nearer to the Park.
The measure has been taken to prevent any harm to the animals migrating towards Karbi Anglong for safe shelter during flood season. As flood waters have inundated KNP, as in previous years, the animals have started crossing over the NH-37 to reach the dry highlands on Karbi Anglong side. Several animals are annually run over by speeding vehicles during this period, forcing the government to take up enhanced steps to ensure their safety.
