With recent rains causing widespread inundation in several areas of Dimapur mainly due to encroachment over public drains, the Dimapur Municipal Council has taken up the issue seriously by issuing show cause notices to those building owners whose structures have caused blockage of drains. DMC advisor Er. Vikholie Neinu of sanitation branch informed that show cause notices have already been issued to building owners at Super Market area and that demolition would start from the second week of July onwards. Blaming much of the problem on haphazard planning and random issuance of building permits, Er. Vikholie Neinu also stated that until and unless the encroached structures were removed, inundation will continue.
DMC sanitation in-charge Lepshi Ao has also been on a war footing for the past few weeks supervising the cleanliness drive for a “Cleaner Dimapur”.
Pointing out that the proportion of water catchments area was not proper, Er.Vikholie Neinu said that new projects and ideas need to be implemented in Dimapur if water logging is to be removed. He also said besides garbage problem, Dimapur also faces the problem of clogging of drains with large quantities of sand.
One of the worst affected areas due to clogging of the drainage is located near Hotel Tragopan. Due to blockage, the drain flows on top of three buildings and to the main road thereby inundating the entire stretch. However, since last week cleaning up of the clogged drain from the other end started off with the active involvement of the house owners. The DMC Advisory Board led by its chief advisor Er. Keditsu also expressed appreciation to the building owners for taking the initiative in clearing drainage as per the directions of the DMC.
