Interim Member of the then Naga People’s Convention (NPC) Khamting Konyak passed away at the age of 86 after a brief illness at Nyahnyu village Thursday night. He is survived by his son, village council chairman of Nyahnyu village and four grand children.
Late Khamting was one among the 42- member Interim Body constituted on February 18, 1961, after the signing of the 16-Point Agreement between the NPC and the Government of India under Pandit Nehru. The council functioned as the de-facto legislature. It had a five-member Executive Council headed by the Chief Executive Councilor.
Dr. Imkongliba Ao, who was the first Chairman of the Naga People’s Convention, was appointed the first Chairman of the Interim Body. However, the interim body was later dissolved after Nagaland was formally declared as the 16th state of Indian Union on December 1,1963 with P Shilu Ao heading a five-member caretaker government.
