Census operations in Manipur received obstructions where enumerators were prevented from carrying out their duties in some villages in Ukhrul district.
Meanwhile, a district based students body in Churachandpur also resolved to boycott carrying out the exercise in some areas of the district. An enumerator deputed at Nambasi Hortai village of the Ukhrul district lodged a complaint with the police stating that he was forced to return from the village before carrying out his duty on June 20 last.
He lodged complaint with the police only on June 27 as the village is far away from nearest police station at Yairipok. Enumerator, Maisnam Jadumani in his report said the chief of the village, Nambasi Hortai village and his men prevented him from discharging his duty as enumerator of the Census on June 20. Jadumani’s case is not the first one obstructing villagers in the census operation. Earlier also, chief of another village of the same village had turned out an enumerator deputed in the district disallowing him to carry out the exercise in their village on June 16 last. On the other hand, the Churachandpur District Students’ Union (CDSU) and Zomi Human Rights Federation (ZHRF) have decided to boycott the census operations in some part of the district bordering with Bishnupur district.
The decision was taken in a joint meeting of the two bodies convened Monday at a community hall in the district headquarters in which chiefs of various villages, leaders of civil societies, social workers etc., took part.
The meeting resolved to oppose carrying out exercise in Henglep sub-division, Saikhul Tribal Development and Tipaimukh sub-division of Churachandpur in Bishnupur and Imphal east district, alleging that some villages within the three sub-divisions of Churachandpur district have been put within the Bishnupur and Imphal east districts in the exercise of the census in the state.
Apart from directing DCs of all districts to supervise the enumerators to check from doubling in the house listing, counting of headset during the census operations, Manipur government has also formed a committee to check overlapping in the operations.
