Tohanba graces statistics day

Parliamentary secretary for economics and statistics and IPR, R. Tohanba on Tuesday said statistics can be used for playing a vital role in the fast and competitive world and also used as the best indicator in all policy making.
“Without statistic, we are hapless in our policy planning,” Tohanba said speaking as the chief guest at the Statistics Day observed in commemoration of the birth anniversary of renowned statistician Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis which was held at the DES Conference Hall, Kohima today.
Tohanba said planning and statistics were inextricable and presumably linked with two faces of the same coin. He said a proper statistical tool and techniques along with a well defined factual was needed for the policy planner to synthesis the plan objective successfully. To achieve better result, Tohanba emphasized on the need for quality data since wrong and false data might lead to erroneous planning.
The parliamentary secretary reminded that the state government had declared the department of economics and statistics as the ‘nodal agency’ for developing an efficient statistical system and ensuring technical coordination in all matters relating to statistical activities in the state. It has been empowered with collection of data, identification of gaps, advising sampling designs and methodologies, scrutinizing and examining all statistical schemes relating to all the department of the state before it is released or disseminated, he added.
He revealed that for elaborate and systematic dissemination of statistical data in the state, the department has set up a ‘monitoring cell’ to authenticate and validate all the line department data.
Tohanba urged upon the statisticians of the department of economics & statistics to draw inspiration from the contribution of Prof Mahalanobis and rededicate themselves in providing a consistent and reliable statistical data, useful for the government to make a prospective plan formulation in order to achieve a balance growth in enhancing the capacity of the living standard.
He described Professor P.C. Mahalanobis as a well-known statistician who devoted his entire life for strengthening the statistical system and its effective role in socio economic planning of the country.
Speaking on the theme ‘Child Statistics,’ secretary Nagaland State Social Welfare Board, Daisy Mezhur acknowledged the huge responsibilities shouldered by the department of economics & statistics in dealing with population. She said the department has the right to insist specific and accurate figures on various children programme implemented by various departments in order to enable the children to lead a better future. She opined that proper statistics on disabled children, children who were into drugs and alcohol should be conducted in order to create child friendly environment.
She called upon the people to take collective as well as independent responsibilities to remedy the present situation by providing correct statistics with all seriousness.
Earlier, additional director, economics & statistics, P. Y. Ovung delivered the welcome address while convenor, organising committee I. Chuba Jamir proposed the vote of thanks. (With DIPR inputs)
