Pradhan siphoning fund to militants arrested

Manipur police on Tuesday arrested a gram panchayat pradhan, arrested on charges of siphoning developmental funds amounting to Rs 18 lakh to an insurgent outfit.
The pradhan of the Nachou Gram Panchayat in Bishnupur district, Nongmaithem Ranjit (46) son of N Abhiram of Nachou village was arrested on Sunday night and produced in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate today. He has been remanded for 10 days.
Police charged the pradhan of being a member of the KYKL and of diverting Rs 18, 00000 sanctioned by the State Finance Commission during the year 1008-09 to the party as party fund.
He withdrew the amounts in three installments, with 75% in the first installment, 20 % in the second and 5% in the third installment during the financial year 2009-10, police charged.
In another extortion related incident, a professor of Radiotherapy of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal hide himself unable to bear the pressure exerted on him by a militants group to pay money demanded from the staff of the Radiotherapy department of the institution.
