Crackdown on ‘tax collection’; 4 held

Mushrooming of illegal tax collection centers continue to rise at various check gates at Dimapur even after the district administration has earlier banned such illegal organizations and unions collecting taxes from truckers in Dimapur district.
On Thursday at around 3:40 pm, Special Operation Team (SOT), Dimapur during a raid at New Field Check gate apprehended four local youths while collection “illegal tax” from trucks, SDPO Tokavi Achumi said Friday.
Police identified the four as Ghukhashe Awamo (30) of Rotomi village under Zunheboto presently residing at Thilixu village, Dimapur; Vikheto Yeptho (23) of Tokishe village under Dimapur district residing at Walford colony, Dimapur; Nikheto Zhimo (21) of Khatara village under Zunheboto currently residing near New Field check gate, Golaghat road and Vikaho Yeptho (20) of Ghosito village under Dimapur district, presently residing at Half Nagarjan near Government Higher Secondary School.
Coupons of various unions and associations- Dimapur Motor Workers Trade Union; Dimapur Truck Owners Association; Dimapur Truck Drivers Union; Karbi Anglong Motor Transport Union and three other coupons functioning under UPDS- Karbi-Anglong Lorry and Karbi-Anglong Guide and a cash of Rs. 2900 were from their possession.
SDPO Nuiland, Tokavi Achumi appealed the public to co-operate with the law enforcing agencies in reducing such menace in the society. He said, “Public must filed complaint with the police if such crime is being committed in their areas so that prompt action can be initiated against the culprits”.
Stating that the sub-centers that are set up by different unions and organization are mere information centre, SDPO Nuiland said that these organizations are using these information centers to collect illegal taxes which they not authorized to do. He further added that no organization or a union is allowed to stop truckers from the National Highways to collect taxes.
Police said that illegal taxes are being collected from truckers and vehicle owners called ‘political funds’ which are being collected to support certain political parties and candidates in the state by illegal tax collectors.
