Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul M Sangma today said the the progress for reopening of border haats is in the advance stage of approval by both countries that is India and Bangladesh.
He said Kalaichar in West Garo hills district and Balat in West Khasi hills district has been indentified for setting up the traditional border haats.
Though there are numerous suggestions for the re opening of Border haats, he said Kalaichar and Balat are pilot projects for the purpose.
Sangma said that the areas are identified on the basis of the need of the people living in the border areas which also have inter dependence with people from across the border.
Earlier, a senior Border Security Force official said that the revival of traditional border haats (markets) would boost the self-confidence of the local people along the Indo-Bangla border in Meghalaya.
“There is no security risk in opening these border haats, but we will work together with Customs and the local police would provide security in these border haats once its operationalised,” he said
Years ago the village economy flourished through barter system (exchange of goods) between the Khasi villagers and the people from neighbouring Bangladesh.
However, the closure of border haats on the pretext of “security” plunged the border villagers in a state of gloom.
