Former Swiss head of state Joseph Deiss was Saturday elected the president of the UN General Assembly by the world body’s 192 member states. Deiss, who was elected by acclamation, will succeed Ali Abdussalam Treki of Libya.
He will take over the presidency in mid-September when 65th session of the General Assembly begins. Deiss, who served as president of Switzerland in 2004, said: “More than ever before, we need to act together to be effective.”
The General Assembly also elected 21 vice-presidents of the 65th session, including Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Jarman, permanent representative of the United Arab Emirates at the UN.
