MR deserter among two militants killed in Manipur

One of the two militants killed by Manipur Police Commandos in a rescued operation to a kidnapped contractor has been identified as a rifleman of the Manipur Rifles who deserted with his
service rifles around 10 year back, police revealed Sunday. Ningthoujam Hemanta of Pangaltabi was among three riflemen of the 7th Manipur Rifles who deserted the camp with the service arms issued to
them in 2001, a police officer said.
A team of Manipur police commandos killed the two as suspected KCP (MC) activists in an alleged encounter at Wangoo Sandankhong village under Sugnu police station in Thoubal district bordering with Bishnupur district yesterday evening, at about 6.30 pm.
When the police commando team rushed to the area based on specific information of keeping conceals the kidnapped person in the area, some armed militants opened fire towards them in which the commando personnel instantly returned.
In the ensuing gunfight that last about two among the armed militant killed. Other managed to escape police said adding the contractor was rescued without any harm.
Two small guns loaded with live rounds from their possessions, they added. In another unrelated incident, a team of Imphal east police commando fired some rounds of guns at Wangkhei Thangapat in Imphal last night at about 7 pm in a bid to nab some suspected militants apparently attempted to a kidnap a person from his house. The gun firing took place at the house of one Gurumayum Angangjaoba where the suspected had intruded but they managed to escape by jumping down from the first floor of the house on the backyard taking advantage of the darkness of the time.
No casualty reported in the firing. However, police seized a vehicle (Honda Activa) bearing registration no. MN01D-1304, police report said.
