Brown Sugar seized, 2 held from Bangladesh border

Border Security Force (BSF) has detained two people near the Bangladesh border in Meghalaya and recovered one pound of brown sugar from their possession, a Border Security Force (BSF) official said The BSF estimate the international value of the Thailand-made contraband was Rs 50 lakh.
“The smugglers (illegally cross-over to India from Bangladesh) were detained Saturday after a tip-off and recovered the drugs from the possession,” BSF Spokesman Ravi Gandhi said. He said the smugglers -- Leondra Ch Sangma and Tainat Sangma - were detained at Baghmara, the district headquarter in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills bordering Bangladesh.
Baghmara is in the western part of Meghalaya is about 450 Km from state capital Shillong. The Indian border guards have stepped up vigil and intensified operations on the international border to check trans-border crimes. Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh, part of which is porous, hilly and unfenced and prone to frequent infiltration.
