CID to investigate assault case in Tripura

The Tripura Home Department has asked the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the incident where a tribal lady was allegedly tortured and assaulted by the village panchayat chief in Dhalai district last month. Director General of Police (DGP) K Selim Ali here today said the incident had rocked both the administration and political circles and for independent and thorough investigation the case was referred to CID.
According to report, the victim was called for a panchayat meeting and there she was allegedly insulted and the panchayat chief beat her up in presence of other villagers. She was even stripped and forced to walk down the entire village.
Her husband lodged a complaint with the police, but allegedly the police refused to accept it and instead advised them to keep quite.
The incident was brought to light through the local media and the Tripura Women’s Commission interacted with the victim and other villagers and found out the truth.
The opposition Congress and some other women organisations have demanded exemplary punishment for the accused persons as well as the police officer.
