A labourer attached with the sanitation branch of Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) was assaulted by three local youth near Dhobinala junction around 3.50 am, Tuesday. Briefing media persons at DMC Chief Advisor’s office, Advisor Er. Vikholie Nienu informed that the youth in drunken state had assaulted the labourer without any provocation.
Meanwhile, condemning the incident, DMC Chief Advisor Er. Keditsu asserted that the assaulted was uncalled for and stated that manhandling the sanitation will not serve any purpose. He also expressed his concern over the way some restaurants and hotels have been serving liquor past midnight. “We will look into the matter and issue some sort of directive to all restaurants and hotels very soon” he added. While at the same time, the Chief Advisor also urged the district administration and police to set up police booths in vulnerable areas to carry vigilance especially during the night.
Er. Vikholie Nienu who was also present during the briefing, maintained that it was ‘serious matter’ and of concern since the labourers are the ones who clean up the entire garbage and rubbish before the break of the dawn. “If the boys had a different intention in harming the labourers, they are most welcome to work here” he averred. Neinu also cautioned that a directive will soon be issued to all restaurants and hotels to open only up to a certain time and that ‘heavy fines’ will be imposed on the defaulters. DMC Sanitation-in-charge Lepshi Ao while criticizing the assault also said that the assault will only discourage the labourers and thereby hamper the work progress of the department.
