United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) today accused Karbi Anglong Congress leaders of attempting to sabotage the peace process so as to retain the status quo power. Addressing a press conference here, the UPDS leaders said it appeared to them that Assam government was allowing itself to be influenced by such “vested interest” at the risk of losing the chance for restoring peace in the hill areas.
Stating that “needless delay” in peace talks was testing their patience, the UPDS leaders said government of Assam, at the behest of the Congress leaders from Karbi Anglong, appeared to be erecting hurdles on the road to peace. They warned that if peace talks failed, it would be because of the failure of the government of Assam to play its part well. “Further delay will only drive the UPDS back to the path of agitation and if that happens the government of Assam will be squarely held responsible,” UPDS cautioned. Assam government on March 25 last made an official announcement on the floor of Assam Assembly that in order to expedite formulating the official view of Assam government on the matter of political and other demands of the UPDS, a ministerial committee would be constituted, which would submit its recommendation within two months. The ministerial panel which was appointed on April 7 expressed commitment to submit its recommendation within a period of two months.
However, even after the specified period expired on June 7 last, the Assam government was yet to send its recommendations to Centre.
