Soni unveils plan for NE

Union minister for Information & Broadcasting, Ambika Soni said the communication strategy of the ministry aimed to provide “quality information by enhancing the outreach of its campaigns through cost effective tools, formats and delivery mechanisms”. Speaking at the two-day All India Editors Conference on Social & Infrastructure Issues in the Northeastern region which began at Guwahti Monday, Soni said the focus was to instill quality programming in disseminating information and reaching out to the remotest part of the country.
Some of the key initiatives taken by the UPA government addressed the overall needs of the Northeast Soni said, which include phased expansion of DD DTH platform proposed to increase free to air channels from 59 to 200.
She also said as announced by the UPA government in promoting language media, the DAVP has been tasked with providing advertisements to language/dialect media as well as reaching out to the media of the region for partnership in the development of the region. Information ministers of the region would meet with the media units of the ministry here Tuesday to enable the central government “outline the road map for more effective communication platforms in future”, Soni said.
Salman Khurshid, minister for Corporate Affairs & Minority Affairs, who also spoke said that the ministry had undertaken several schemes to bring about a holistic development profile for the minorities. Meanwhile, Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi, N Kapur, Pr. director general (M&C) also spoke.
