Police batoncharged and teargassed supporters of Opposition parties to prevent them from entering Assam secretariat during their `Dispur Chalo’ rally here to protest against the multi-crore rupees scam in N C Hills District Autonomous Council and price rise.
Official sources said several political party supporters, including women, were injured in the police action.
The batoncharge and teargassing took place when over 4000 agitators attempted to break the barricades put up by the police and CRPF and enter the high-security Dispur area led by the main opposition party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
Other opposition parties the BJP, AUDF, CPI and CPI-M too participated in the rally.
They held an impromptu public meeting when they were not allowed to proceed and the leaders included among others, AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary, his predecessor Prafulla Kumar, BJP president Ranjit Dutta, AUDF president Badruddin Ajmal and state CPI leader Promode Gogoi.
One person was killed and 27 AGP workers from Morigaon district were injured when their bus turned turtle near Khanapara here as they were proceeding for the rally, police said.
Meanwhile, the Opposition disrupted the proceedings of the Assam Assembly on the second day of the Monsoon Session today, demanding an adjournment motion to discuss the multi-crore financial scam in NC Hills autonomous district council. The Opposition members laid siege at the Well of the House from the moment the Assembly met in the morning, forcing Speaker TB Rai to adjourn the proceedings twice before the House was finally wrapped up within two hours of business.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bharat Narah later criticized the role of the Opposition and alleged that they had failed in their responsibility of discussing serious issues concerning the people of the states.
Legislators of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), BJP, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Left parties and a few Independents stormed into the Well as soon as the Question Hour started, reported UNI. They shouted slogans demanding the Speaker allow an adjournment motion brought by the Opposition yesterday for discussion on the financial scam in the NC Hills (now Dima Hasao) autonomous district council.
The Speaker adjourned the Question Hour, but when the House reassembled at 1000 hours, similar scenes were repeated. The House was again adjourned for 15 minutes as the Opposition continued shouting slogans in front of the Speakers chair. Speaker Rai tried to pacify the Opposition legislators and pleaded with them to allow proceedings, but the latter’s unrelenting attitude led to wrapping up of proceedings for the day within 1100 hours. The Speaker refused to allow the adjournment motion, further agitating the Opposition members. Minister Narah, later talking to reporters, said the situation created by the Opposition had eroded their status.
‘’The means adopted by the Opposition are unconstitutional and undemocratic,’’ he said.
Narah said the government was open to discussion on the NC Hills scam but was opposed to the adjournment motion as other burning issues of the state too deserved equal importance in the Assembly. The government will give a notice to the Speaker on its own to allow a discussion on the NC Hills scam in this session, he added.
