Based on information received from some sources, Dimapur police on Monday evening raided an ‘unauthorized’ fertilizer godown at Purana bazaar area. Some bag of paddies reportedly meant for human consumption kept in the same area with the urea fertilizers was also recovered.
According to well placed sources, the ‘unauthorized’ supply of urea fertilizers was being carried out surreptitiously in connivance with some individuals despite the fact that only three agencies are authorized by the department for the entire state.
Disclosing more about the incident, one of the authorized agencies informed that they had even written to the Agri department officials about the unauthorized activities but with no result till date. “Nobody in the department is serious about the issue” they averred. The agency owners also further questioned the way in which some bags paddies were kept along with the urea. “Even inhaling it has some harmful effects” they informed.
Meanwhile, on inquiring about the follow up action from the police, OC East police station informed that since there was no criminality angle involved, there was no provision under the law for dealing with such kind of ‘unauthorized’ activities.
He also maintained that keeping of paddy and urea fertilizer did not come under the purview of food adulteration. However, he added that investigations are still going on.
