Asia’s 2nd largest village gets ATM

Axis Bank Kohima branch has added another feather on its cap by opening perhaps the first ever Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) counter at Kohima village, the second largest village in Asia near Khedi Baptist Church on Friday.
The new ATM counter which is the 3rd offsite ATM of Axis Bank, Kohima branch was formally inaugurated by Minister for Higher and Technical Education and Urban Development Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu who also hails from the village and also the local MLA.
In his address, Dr. Shurhozelie congratulated Axis Bank and expressed gratitude at the bank for extending the facilities and service to the doorstep of Kohima village. He termed the opening of the new ATM counter as a step forward to the economy of the village.
He however regretted that despite banks being at the doorstep today, many people do not know banking system but expressed his hope that the new ATM counter would generate, more awareness will be generated among the people. “Bank is not only a place to keep money but can avail lot of other facilities and service”, he said and appeal the villagers to spread the message.
In terms on money, Shurhozelie said he had experience two generations of life and shared his experience during his childhood day when there was no currency note except coins which was very valuable. “During our younger days, we did not see bank notes. Even a paisa was a very big amount and we can buy three pans”, he said adding that with a rupee, his parents could buy 16 seers (Kg) of rice.
Until mid early 40s during the Japanese times, contractors used to bring money in coins and there was no bank for which rich people used to bury their money to hide from thieves, he added.
Kohima Village Council Chairman Keduotuolie Mepfhüo who also spoke on the occasion said that he had not heard of any village in the country or anywhere else having an ATM counter and profusely thanked the Axis Bank for extending the facility of ATM in Kohima village.
Earlier, Branch Head & AVP Losü Nipuni in his introductory remark said Axis Bank formerly known as UTI Bank was a new generation and fast growing bank having 1027 branches and 8 extension counters as on 31st March 2010. The Bank also has overseas branches and representatives offices at Singapore, Hongkong, Dubai and Shanghai.
Axis Bank has 4293 ATMs as on March 31 and is opening new ATMs every month while the Bank will be opening 400 branches in the current financial year, he said. While reminding that the Axis Bank Kohima Branch was opened 3 years back, the Branch Head said it had grown significantly with currently 9000 customers.
Stating that the branch as a good number of customers from the Kohima village and that it was a long wish to reach the customer nearer by opening ATM in the locality, he said the installation was delayed due to some problem while procuring the machine. He however reminded that the new ATM counter would not only benefit the customer of the Axis Bank but also ATM card holders of other banks.
