State government has decided not to pursue further consultations on the matter of prohibition for the time being as there appeared to be no consensus on the issue. The decision was arrived at after taking into account the reaction of various individuals, NGOs and the Church on the issue, stated a statement issued by the commissioner and secretary, Imkonglemba IAS. The excise department clarified that the earlier consultative meeting was called to have a brainstorming session on the issue of prohibition, its success or failure and the advisability of continuing the prohibition or lifting it or partially. It stated that the Church was not invited in the first stage of the meeting as their views and stand on the issue was clear. The excise department said the next logical step would have been holding consultation with the Church if the government was of the opinion that prohibition needed to be lifted.
