Representatives from five organisations today demanded that Christians and Muslims of Scheduled Caste (SC) origin be accorded the SC status in accordance with the recommendation of Justice Ranganath Misra Commission.
According to UNI, leaders from National Council of Dalit Christians, Catholic Bishops Council of India Commission of SC/ST/OBC, All-India Jamiat-Ul-Hawareen, All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz and National Council of Churches of India demonstrated here and demanded that The Constitution (Scheduled Caste) Order of 1950 be scrapped.
They stressed that conversion to another faith did not change the economic status of the Dalits.
All-India Jamiat-Ul-Hawareen president Hafeez Ahmed Hawari said, ‘’the Order continues to deny Dalit status to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims even after it was amended twice to extend it to Dalit Sikhs and Dalit Buddhists. The Dalits are one regardless of their religion.’’ Indian Social Institute secretary Xavier Jeyaraj said, ‘’there is a wide political consensus on the issue and several leaders like M Karunanidhi, J Jayalalitha, Prakash Karat, Mayawati, Lalu Prasad and Ram Vilas Paswan have written to the PM supporting our demands.’’ ‘’A delegation of Dalit Christian and Dalit Muslim leaders has also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Despite this, the Government does not seem willing to raise the issue in Parliament,’’ he alleged.
