The 196th Bhanu Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Bhanubhakta Acharya, the first poet of Nepali language was organized at Medziphema town hall by Medziphema Gorkha Union with Kumar Subba, chairman, Dimapur Gorkha union as chief guest and Dr. Ranjana Chetry, medical and health officer as guest of honour.
The union stated that the main objective in commemorating the event was to educate people on the importance of education, literature and in promoting the Nepali language. The chief guest in his speech narrated on the saying of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya and on his life, as a man who rendered service for mankind. He said that a person was known by deeds and not by wealth adding whatever one does for the society remained even after death.
While urging the community to do something for the people, he said “when the Mother in a family is educated, then the whole family is educated. But when only father is educated, he goes alone”. The chief guest also requested to the public to donate blood on the occasion of Balidan Diwas (Sacrifice Day) to be observed on August 25 in memory of Saheed Durga Malla who was hanged to death by the then British government while fighting for India’s Independence.
The guest of honour, Dr. Ranjana Chetry spoke on the importance of education. She said a person need to study hard and at the same time reiterated that education did not mean studying engineering and medical but to judge what is right and wrong and in making the best choice for development. She said when there is education the community would progress and prosper and further urged the womenfolk to come out from the old traditional ways of being confined to domestic chores. She also spoke on the importance of blood donation by highlighting that blood donation causes no side effect but is beneficial for person who donate blood.
Other who spoke in the program included Sanjay Pandey, finance secretary, Dimapur Gorkha union and Shibu B.K, president Gorkha Youth Club, Dimapur. On the occasion, the union also facilitated two students from Medziphema area who got first division in the last HSLC exam. A cash reward and a citation were given to the meritorious students Bikram Ghimire and Sangeeta Paudel of St. Fransis HS School, Medziphema.
