Following an alleged "serious intimidation" on Sangai Express Churachandpur Correspondent S. Singlianmang Guite by armed Hmar People's Convention (D) the Manipur journalist ceased work for the day on Thursday. On the night of July 19, armed miscreants intruded into the house of Singlianmang Guite and threatened him, his spouse and family members with arms.
As a result, publication of newspapers (in local dialects) in the district had been suspended for infinite period from Thursday. Scribes in the district said that they would continue to cease-work until the government authority takes appropriate action against the culprits. Further, lamented that the act of armed miscreants towards their colleague was a challenge to the fraternity in the state and suppression of freedom of expression.
"Don't interfere to the freedom of expression of scribes, we want working peacefully, do not give hindrance in discharging duty by the scribes," read some of the slogans at the protest site. With scribes out of duty, all media houses including news section of the local cable network remained closed for the day.
The incident was not the first in which scribes and media houses were threatened by the militants in Manipur. The latest incident was suspension of publication of Imphal based newspapers for two days in the last week of June this year. In protest against the act of the miscreants, the scribes based in Churachandpur district had already launched indefinite cease-work from Wednesday.
