: The External Affairs Ministry has approved setting up of Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) in Itanagar, Shillong, Aizawl, Kohima and Imphal within three months.
The ministry has approved the proposal forwarded by its Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC) in order to decentralise the issuance of passports in these state capitals, Lok Sabha member Takam Sanjoy, a member of the committee informed on Thursday.
The PSC members, along with officials, the Chief Postmaster General and DGP of the above states had a threadbare meeting on Wednesday before arriving at the decision, Sanjoy said.
While the above five PSKs will be under the Guwahati Regional Passport Office (RPO), the PSK at Agartala and Gangtok will be under Kolkata RPO, Sanjoy said adding the permanent RPO in Guwahati will be built in a year, reported UNI.
The PSK in Itanagar will function from a rented house to provide services to the people at their doorsteps, he added.
He drew the attention of the passport authorities to scrutinize the applications of the refugees living in Arunachal Pradesh, besides those in Tirap and Changlang.
While highlighting the discrepancies of the Guwahati RPO and the sufferings caused to the applicants, DIGP Robin Hibu, who represented the state, suggested a 24x7 helpline at RPO to provide correct information to the people to minimise their sufferings.
