Dimapur police today arrested five persons while attempting to smuggle 500 cases of assorted liquor (IMFL) in a mini truck at Chumukedima check gate in the wee hours of Wednesday, police said.
The Kohima-bound mini truck (NL-07A-3695), loaded with the consignment, was intercepted by police manning the Chumukedima check at around 2:20 a.m. during routine inspection.
The seized contraband included 185 cases of ‘Kingfisher’ canned beer, 245 cases of ‘He-man’ beer, 25 cases of ‘Radiant’ rum and 45 cases of ‘Bacardi’ breezer. The arrested were identified as Jack Achumi (28), Rhenben Lotha (40), Khehoto (30), Tia Temsu Imchen (25) and the driver Kumar Limbu (27).
The police said, after preliminary investigation, all the accused were forwarded to court, with a request for further remand of a 48-hour period. However, police disclosed that the court turned down the request and subsequently released all the five on bail.
Police said the release of the accused and rejection of the plea for remand has virtually made it impossible to follow the case. The accused were not properly interrogated and therefore a 48-hour remand was requested but it was refused.
Expressing unhappiness at the developments today, a police officer said “we are an investigating agency and supposed to interrogate properly in order to get more information on the case”
