The Oberoi Vanyavilas, Ranthambore, has been ranked the best hotel in the world. The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra, Rajvilas Jaipur and Udaivilas Udaipur have been ranked second, third and fourth respectively in Asia and positioned number five, 13 and 15 (in the same order) in world ranking, according to a readers’ poll by ‘Travel+Leisure’ magazine, stated Reuters.
Interestingly, the group’s domestic expansion plans include opening Oberoi Gurgaon by Dec 2010/early January 2011. In a letter addressed to the group’s chairman PRS Oberoi, Union tourism minister Kumari Selja said the award is the “crowning glory” of Incredible India. She congratulated him for his exceptional leadership.
For Oberoi the award and the ranking are special because it comes from people who stayed in these hotels and have shared their ratings based on their experience in categories like rooms, service, facilities, location, restaurants and food. “We’ve built our hotels with care and service, for which due credit must go to our staff and employees. This recognition and ranking means that we are the best hotels in India,” he said. Liam Lambert, president, Oberoi hotels and resorts, said “we have an abiding obsession with luxury where our greatest asset is the people we serve.”
With 16 luxury hotels and resorts in India, Mauritius, Indonesia, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the group also plans to open two hotels in Hyderabad — an Oberoi and a Trident, a Trident in Dehra Dun, a small resort in Chandigarh, a 200-year-old palace in Madhya Pradesh which is 20 kilometres from Khajuraho and another hotel in Rajasthan. Overseas plans, according to Oberoi, include opening a hotel in Dubai by 2012 and one in Morocco.
“We aim to double in next five years” says Oberoi who’s however a bit uncomfortable with the current global environment especially the Euro crisis.
