Veteran Naga politician and former Governor Dr SC Jamir on Tuesday rued that corruption has lost its meaning in Nagaland where people are no longer ashamed to accept bribes while a cloud of fear envelops Naga society. Addressing the Tsungremong festival celebration organized by Ongpangkong Senso Telongjem Chumukedima at Mount Mary Higher Secondary School, Dr Jamir also said Nagas have to solve their own problems and should not expect others to do so.
He also asked whether those who use the slogan ‘Nagaland for Christ’ were actually following it. “The insurgency syndrome has created uneasiness among the people” he said.
He lamented that villagers and administrators were reluctant to speak out the truth and the churches fail to raise voice against evils plaguing Naga society.
Expressing concern over the present condition of the Naga society, Dr Jamir said even many young scholars refused to return home and it was a problem that needed deep introspection. He also advised the youths not to expect fruits without growing roots.
Calling upon the Aos to recollect and emphasize history, Dr Jamir said Aos should make other Naga tribes understand their contribution to the Naga society. “We should not be proud but be grateful to God and be humble” he said. Jamir further cautioned Aos that if other spoke ill about them, it was something to ponder over. He urged Aos to make others understand that they were for unity of Nagas. However, the first step was to eradicate jealously within otherwise, Aos would not be able to inspire others.
Earlier during the programme, missionary Rev.Tiyong Kichu and Prof. Mufutiba of Dimapur Government College also spoke during the programme. Various cultural events were also presented by different groups.
