The state government has decided not to hold the road show scheduled to be held in Pungro town from August 6 to 8 coinciding with Metemneo festival.
According to an official notification issued by additional chief secretary and development commissioner Alemtemshi Jamir, the government has taken cognizance of certain sections of the people and elements in Kiphere district who were opposed to road show being held at Pungro.
He said many government officers, of the designated departments, en-route Pungro faced problems in reaching their destination to make necessary arrangements because some sections of the people resorted to violent means of agitation. He said such actions could also endanger the life and safety of the participating officers, staffs of various departments and members of the public.
Alemtemshi pointed out that government programmes such as road shows were decided in the larger interest of the people to facilitate people-government interface along with promoting the rich socio-cultural traditions of the people and also promote tourism and other economic growth. He said in view of the prevailing atmosphere in Pungro area, the purpose of the road show would defeat the “good intentions of the government policy” and therefore, decided to cancel it.
Kiphire situation tense
Kohima/ Kiphire correspondents:
Tension appeared to be brewing fast at Kiphire-Pungro junction following an agitating mob blocking the road to prevent the state government sponsored three-day Pungro Roadshow coinciding with the Yimchunger festival Medümnio scheduled to begin August 6.
According to reports, USLB volunteers gathered at the Kiphire-Pungro junction with daos and spears, 16 km before Kiphire town, and obstructed movement of people and vehicular traffic towards Pungro today.
The volunteers also reportedly dug up the road and also cut off foot bridges to prevent any movement of people.
State parliamentary secretary R. Tohanba and several government nodal officers and DIPR team, who were on their way to Pungro for the road show, were reportedly stopped and forced to return to Meluri. State PWD (R&B) personnel were also reportedly prevented from repairing the dug up road.
There were unconfirmed report of some slight damages and puncture of tyres of some government vehicles including the vehicle of ADC Kiphire by the mob.
It was also reported that following unruly behaviour of the mob, the IRB personnel resorted to blank firing.
Meanwhile, talking to this Correspondent, the SDO (C) of Pungro John Tsulise said USLB has placed a condition before that government demanding a written document from the government admitting that Pungro town as land of Sangtams if road show was to be held. Meanwhile, following today’s incident, state chief minister has reportedly convened a high level meeting at his official bungalow today evening to take stock of the prevailing situations at Kiphire.
