Medecins Sans Frontieres takes over Mon hospital

The much awaited partnership between the department of health and family welfare and the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) for management of the District Hospital Mon was officially launched today at district hospital premises, Mon.
Chief guest of the programme minister for forest & ecology, environment, wildlife and excise M.C Konyak, while thanking the MSF team for coming to such an exterior place like Mon also underscored the attitude of Nagas in regard to work culture. According to him, many of the Nagas’ do not even want to work outside and are confined to their respective districts and said Nagas should take the example of MSF team who were committed and have sacrificed to work all over the world, to help the needy.
Welcoming the MSF team the minister expressed gratitude to them saying “Your coming here is like a drop of water in the dessert”. He expressed hope that organization would fill the gap where the government was unable to reach or cover. He also appealed to MSF team to upgrade from secondary health care to full-fledged health care, if possible.
Minister of School Education Nyeiwang Konyak, who attended the occasion as guest of honour also thanked MSF team and said the long cherished dreams of the people of Mon district have been realized with their coming.
Emphasizing on the importance of good health he said health determinants can only be achieved by putting health at the centre of school and political agenda and collaboration of all sectors involved in the development process through meaningful involvement of community in the planning, implementation and maintenance.
Menukhol John, commissioner and secretary, department of health and family welfare, while highlighting an over view on the partnership, stated that although it was the dream of health and family welfare department to provide to the people, health services that were affordable and freely accessible by the people, there were certain limitation in terms of implementation. But still continue to work and strive to see that something is delivered to the people.
Cautioning that partnership with MSF do not provide them with magic formula to turn the district Hospital to a five star hospital overnight he said it would take time for adjustments, and to settle down.
Also speaking at the occasion DC Mon Dinesh Kumar, IAS said the present status of health and family welfare department was very poor, as there were certain problems and difficult areas where the department was lacking. But with the partnership of MSF, he expressed hope that many lives would be saved and that they will deliver best possible health care services to the people of the region. He also expressed hope that the MSF will reach out to the sub divisional areas in the years to come.
Khoiwang, President Konyak Union, speaking on behalf of the Konyak civil societies expressed happiness over the new partnership and assured full support and cooperation to the new team.
According to Pierangelo Gandini, Head of Mission, MSF-India, Mon had been chosen after a year of study during which the organization saw the lack of basic medical care which was unacceptable to them as a medical humanitarian. He said MSF were committed to provide basic service so that at least minor procedures could be performed in district hospital besides helping provide materials, medicines, basic equipment and services of its volunteers. The Head of Mission also said that MSF would also lend its support during emergencies like flood, earthquake etc, not only in Mon but in the whole of Nagaland.
Meanwhile a team for hospital management, comprising of hospital staff, administration and NGOs was set up, with DC as the chairman, field coordinator MSF as secretary and chief medical officer, medical focal point MSF, senior medical officer, superintendent of nurse, President Konyak Union, president KNSK and executive secretary KBBB as members.
