Meghalaya police Wednesday registered criminal cases against two Assam sports officials for impersonating as members of Meghalaya Hockey Association to vote in the August 5 Hockey India elections.
Raj Kakoti treasurer of Assam Olympic Association and Sumita Sinha have claimed themselves as members of the electoral college for Hockey India election. “We have registered case against the duo under sections of 419/34 Indian Penal Code based on the lodged FIR,” Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem said
Syiem said the investigation is on and Kakoti and Sinha will be question.
Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs department Tuesday lodged after the directorate of sports and youth affairs here filed an FIR against Kakoti and Sinha from Assam for cheating and impersonation.
Hockey India elections are being held after much delay with the Supreme Court stepping in and giving directive to hold the election on August 5. The Ministry of Sports and Youth affairs have given its no-objection to Hockey India’s election amidst criticism from KPS Gill who leads the rebel Indian Hockey Federation.
Former India captain Pargat Singh and former Indian Women’s Hockey Federation president and interim Hockey India chief, 83-year-old Vidya Stokes are vying for the president’s post.
However, there are different factions within the association and infighting is common amongst the members.
Now with Kakoti and Sinha trying to pass on as officials from MHA, aspersions are being cast on the ensuing August 5 elections if at all it would be held without any bias.
On the other hand, Meghalaya Hockey Association is non-functional and the state hardly has any hockey players around.
“the act by the two persons (Kakoti and Sinha) to represent the state without any authorisation by anybody from hockey association here is tantamount to an act of fraud with malafide intentions to mislead the returning officer of the (August 5) elections,” a directorate of sports and youth affairs statement said.
The statement said that Kakoti and Sinha do not belong to any association or federation under the Meghalaya Olympic Association or Sports department in Meghalaya and therefore the FIR was lodged for fraudulently representing the state.
