Even after the state government decided to call off its proposed road show in Pungro town, the situation in Kiphire remained tense and volatile Thursday as United Sangtam Likhum Bunji (USLB) volunteers continued to prevent vehicular traffic from heading towards Pungro town. There were also reports of firing in Pungro junction at around 6 p.m. today evening after USLB volunteers initiated the blank firing. Sources said IRB personnel, in retaliation, also fired some rounds. However, no casualty was reported till the time of filing this report. According to eye witnesses, one vehicle (gypsy) was badly damaged and the diver physically assaulted by mob in Pungro junction, while the vehicle was attempting to go to Pungro. Meanwhile, the USLB today submitted a letter to deputy commissioner, Kiphire, acknowledging government’s decision to call off road show in Pungro town. They, however, cautioned that no invitees would be allowed to enter Pungro so as to avoid “unnecessary social unrest” under its jurisdiction.
