Militant killed in encounter

An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security personnel in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, police said today.
The encounter took place at Nambasi area in the district bordering Myanmar yesterday and a small arm was recovered from the spot, the police said.
So far more than 70 persons have been killed in militancy-related incidents in the state.
Meanwhile, unidentified militants today exploded a bomb at the house of a Manipur government official but no casualty was reported, police said. Police said the militants lobbed the explosive at the house of director of Youth Affairs and Sports, Boby Waikhom here at Loklaobung area at around 8 a.m. They said the militants’ lobbed two grenades but only one exploded. Monetary demand could be the reason, sources said adding that no one was arrested so far.
Later, another unexploded bomb was recovered from the outhouse of the director and disposed off by the personnel of the state police bomb disposal squad. Decrying the bomb attack, womenfolk of the locality staged a sit-in protest against the act of the militants.
They lamented that militants were indulging in irresponsive acts for the sake of money and for their own interest.
