Girl injured at Namsa

A19-year old girl, identified as Pesha Konyak, daughter of Toalong of Yanpan village was reportedly injured by a stray bullet fired allegedly by activists of the NSCN (I-M). Reports said the NSCN (I-M) activists were shooting at their former comrade who managed to escape unhurt, near welcome gate Namsa, Friday at around 3:10 am. The Class VI student of GHS Tizit who was injured on the toe was later rushed to PHC Tizit for treatment. According to a police report, the NSCN (I-M) activists, in civies had fired shots at one of the passenger after the latter alighted from the Mon-bound bus. It was reported that the intended victim, identified as Omwang Konyak of Chui village had defected from NSCN (I-M) sometime back. The shooting took place in a residential area, few meters away from the bus stop and Nagaland Police Check post, Namsa. Meanwhile, the Konyak Union (KU) has condemned the incident describing it as “very painful” to witness such activities when the entire Nagas were desperately striving for peace and reconciliation. “It is a direct insult to what FNR and Nagas stand for,” KSU president Khoiwang Konyak and general secretary Toang said in a joint press statement. The KSU cautioned all underground factions that such incidents should not be repeated especially in Konyak soil henceforth. Meanwhile, the Konyak Union Tizit (KUT) also held an emergency meeting today and condemned the firing incident. According to KUT office bearers, the incident occurred when Omwang who recently defected to “NSCN (K)” was on his way to Mon from Dimapur. KUT president Nokthak and advisor Yanang have urged upon the NSCN (I-M) authority to take disciplinary action against the culprits and also appealed to the party involved to compensate the victim injured by a stray bullet.
