Dhubri forest officials have busted a fake permit racket in which the same permit was being used to transport wood products to various places in Assam and also to Bengal.
This modus operandi was detected when a truck, from Gouripur in Dhubri, carrying window frames made of sal, was seized by forest officials at Chagolia interstate checkgate.
A forest official said the truck, bearing number AS-17/1137 and carrying window frames, left Gouripur towards Chagolia and was crossing over to Bengal when it was flagged down at the gate. After the forest officials examined the papers, they found that it was a backdated permit, the validity of which had expired long back, the official said.
The official added that the permit was obtained for transporting materials from Gouripur to Guwahati, but the same permit was being produced time and again to transport household materials made of timber to Bengal through the Chagolia interstate checkgate.
“Forest officials were tipped off that a truck carrying window frames had moved from Gouripur towards Chagolia, which is located just opposite Guwahati,” he added.
Dhubri divisional forest officer Hiranya Sarma said the permit to transport the window frames was used but the timber smugglers had kept it with them to use it on many more occasions. “We are now investigating as who are the smugglers involved in the transportation. However, besides seizing the window frames, we have also started the official process to confiscate the truck,” Sarma added. Last week, two illegal saw mills in Kaim-Mati village under Choto Guma reserve forest in Dhubri district were dismantled and 150 cubic feet timber seized in a joint raid conducted by Sarma and Dhubri additional superintendent of police Hitesh Roy.
The owners of the two illegal saw mills were identified as Kasem Khandakar and Hanif Mondal of Kaim-Mati village. The duo are absconding, a police source said.
