NABARD state level meet on bank linkage

A state level meet on self help group (SHG) bank linkage programme and formation and financing of joint liability group (JLG) was conducted by NABARD, Nagaland Regional Office on July 22 at AIDA Training Centre, Dimapur.
The SHG bank linkage and formation and financing JLGs are the programmes of NABARD designed for providing focused attention to credit need of the rural people living below poverty level and landless farmers/ tenant farmers/ oral leases/ small and marginal farmers/ poor artisans.
The meet was inaugurated by general manager, NABARD, Nagaland Regional office, Dr. U.S. Saha, and attended by managing director and AGM, Nagaland State Cooperative Bank; chief manager, SBI; lead district manager (Dimapur and Peren), officials of commercial banks, representatives from NGOs and members of farmers’ clubs.
In his address, Dr. Saha stressed on role of banks and NGOs in promotion of SHGs and JLGs for enhancing the income level of the poor families in Nagaland.
He focused more on joint liability group (JLG) stating it was a new concept where a group of 4 to 10 poor individuals can come together for receiving credit from formal financial institutes on individual basis or jointly against mutual guarantee, along with incentive for promotion of JLGs by NABARD. Officers of NABARD made presentation formation and financing of joint liability groups (JLGS) followed by a detailed discussion.
An action plan was also agreed upon by banks, NGOs and NABARD for promotion of JLGs in Nagaland during 2010-11.
Further in the meet the progress of 06 SHG bank linkage projects sanctioned by NABARD for formation and, nurturing and credit linkage of 750 SHGs was discussed with the banks and partner NGOs.
The meet also decided to work in close cooperation for formation of 750 quality SHGs and provide them avenues for augmenting their source of income. The skill training requirement of the SHGs was also discussed and the partner NGOs was advised to formulate and submit to NABARD.
