Kanwaljit Deol, an AGMUT (Assam, Goa, Mizoram and union territories) cadre IPS offcier of 1977 batch, has been appointed the new Director General of police (DGP) of the state.
The second woman police chief of the state in a row took over the charge yesterday after the post remained vacant for about two months following her predecessor Vimla Mahra’s return to New Delhi on May 28 after being released by the state government, official sources informed here today.
Ms Deol, who was additional secretary, Lok Sabha secretariat, was received by Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) Tashi Lama, Robin Hibu and Devesh C Srivastava on her arrival at naharlagun helipad last afternoon. She was given a guard of honour at the police headquarters (PHQ).
“Tighten your belts to improve discipline and impartiality to improve your image and public-police relations,’’ the new DGP exhorted the officers while addressing them at PHQ immediately after her arrival.
Ms Deol would have a challenging time with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) post lying vacant and numerous tasks, including that of the kidnapping of Maharashtra forest official VS Bardekar, who was kidnapped from Kamengbari in West Kameng district on May 13 by suspected NDFB militants, sources added.
