Manipur ministers’ triple salary hike

Salaries and allowance of the ministers including the chief minister and legislatures of the Manipur assembly will be hiked triple times the existing rate. Two bills regarding the matters will be discussed in the House, an official source said Wednesday. “The assembly will discuss the two bills introduced in the House seeking amendment to the salaries and allowances of minister (Manipur) Act, 1972 and salaries and allowances of members of the legislative assembly (Manipur) Act, 1972 tomorrow, the source said. The monthly salary of the chief minister will be increased to Rs 23,000 form the existing Rs 6000 and that of ministers and deputy chief minister (if any) will be increased from the existing Rs 5000 to Rs 22,000 a month while from Rs 4800 to Rs 21,000 for that of ministers of state, once the bills are passed in the House and enacted as Act. Besides the salary, the chief minister will be paid a daily allowance of Rs 1, 500 within the state and Rs 2,500 outside the state while the cabinet minister and minister Rs 1,400 within the state and Rs 2,400 outside the state and minister of state will enjoy a sum of Rs 1,375 within the state and Rs 2.300 outside the state. Currently, the chief minister is enjoying an allowance of Rs 3000 per month while Rs 2000 per month by the cabinet ministers. The entertainment allowance of chief minister, cabinet ministers which is Rs 3000 and Rs 2500 per month will also be revised at Rs 12,000 per month and Rs 11,000 respectively. The salary per month of an MLA will be revised at Rs 18,500 from the existing rate of Rs 6,750 and the daily allowance from Rs 350 to Rs 700 (within the state) and from Rs 700 to Rs 1500 (outside the state). The existing constituency, contingency, secretariat and entertainment allowances per month for each member which is Rs 5250, Rs 4500 and Rs 2250 respectively will be increased to Rs 12,000, Rs 8,000 and Rs 15,000. This will be in addition to the salaries and allowance of the members. The bills with regard revision of salaries and allowances of the chief minister and ministers and MLAs were introduced in the House by the chief minister who is also taking charge of finance portfolio. Once the bills are enacted and brought into operation, it will involve an additional expenditure of Rs 1.34 crore a year from the consolidated fund of the state.
