Centre has said that data on violent incidents in north eastern states – state-wise – for the period Jan to Jun 2010 and comparative data for the same period during previous two years did not reflect any increase in militant activities..
Union minister of state in the ministry of home affairs Mullappally Ramachandran, in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha Wednesday said: “government is aware that the normal life of common people do get affected due to activities of certain militant groups who indulge in various insurgent activities including kidnapping for ransom, extortion, etc.”
Ramachandran said the central government has deployed central security forces to aid the state authorities for carrying out counter insurgency operations.
He also said that centre was providing security for vulnerable institutions and installations and was sharing intelligence on continuous basis.
The minister stated that centre was providing financial assistance for strengthening local police forces and intelligence agencies, under the police modernization scheme.
The centre is also providing assistance for strengthening various aspects of security apparatus and counter-insurgency operations and raising India reserve battalions by way of reimbursement of security related expenditure, the minister stated.
The scheme, he said was being implemented in all states of the region except Mizoram and Sikkim.
“Unified Command has been set up in the states of Assam and Manipur to ensure coordinated operations,” he said.
