KVK scientific advisory meet held

Scientific Advisory Committee meeting of KVK Dimapur, ICAR Research Complex Nagaland Centre was organized on July 27 with Dr. A.K. Gogoi, Zonal Project Director, Zone III, ICAR Barapani, Meghalaya as chief guest.
Dr. D.P Sharma, dean SASRD Nagaland University, Medziphema, M.K Mondal, DGM NABARD, A.Y. Ovung, director of agriculture, Dr. Deepak Chetri, joint director (Agri), Lampohyin, joint director and principal, IETC Medziphema, district level functionaries from Agri and allied departments Govt .of Nagaland, Dr. N Haque, principal scientist, NRC-M, Dr. A.K Tripathi, nodal officer, KVKs ICAR Barapani and Scientists from ICAR Nagaland Centre, Govt. of Nagaland and the farmer representatives attended the meeting.
Meeting started with the welcome address proposed by V.Kenny Rhetso, SMS(H.Sc), KVK Dimapur followed by presentation of the action taken report on the recommendations of the last SAC meeting held on August 11, 2009, annual report (2009-2010) and annual action plan (2010-2011).
Expressing the necessity to educate farmers on the technologies, Dr. D.P Sharma expressed that need for co-ordination amongst scientists, technicians, extension workers and beneficiaries. Director agriculture emphasized on quality seed and planting material production to achieved the food self- sufficiency in the state. It was agreed upon that a separate meeting would be held to discuss this vital issue.
Dr. A.K Tripathi emphasized on the economics of cultivation which include the cost of family labours. M.K Mondal requested for the convergence of resources and a proper and systemic co-ordination between NABARD, State Agri and allied departments, SASRD and the ICAR to create a farming system model in the farmers field so that others get motivated and replicate the model.
Dr. N Haque emphasized on the development of micro watershed so if need be resources shall be pooled to depict the impact of technologies generated.
Dr. Deepak Chetri requested KVK to survey the area under high yielding varieties of paddy in Dimapur area. Dr.B Sahu, Scientist Soil and Water Conservation, ICAR suggested to record the longitude, latitude and altitude while collecting the soil samples from farmer’s field. Lampohyin stressed upon characterization and demonstration of indigenous land races of Rajmas being cultivated in Tuensang, Zuneboto and other districts of Nagaland. N. Wetsah, DAO and PD ATMA, Dimapur requested to adopt the villages in hilly terrains.
Chairman SAC, Dr. B. P Bhatt, promised that survey, documentation and characterization of local Rajmas shall be completed within this year so as to indentify suitable races for cultivation in Dimapur district. He also emphasized on Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) and seed production programme in paddy and also Ferrow Lined Cemented tank for rain water harvesting should be implemented in the district. A total of 32 members attended the meeting.
