Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC) on Friday expressed strong opposition to the proposed Metemnyu festival of Yimchungers-cum-state road show slated to be held in the first week of August at Pungro town, Kiphire.
A joint press statement issued by TTC president Topan. K and vice president R. Tosang Tikhir said the proposed event could not be held at Pungro without "mutual consultation and consent" of TTC, as the entire Pungro sub-division fell under Tikhir jurisdiction.
It said the state government had issued order in October 1985 declaring inter tribal dispute existed in the area, and as such holding of meetings/conferences/Christian associations etc. were restricted.
TTC also stated that government's order was reaffirmed in February 2001 and that tribals/students/church leaders of the responsible tribes would require prior administrative approval for holding such conference/associations meeting etc. at any village under Kiphire and Shamator sub-division.
TTC alleged that its counterpart organization, Yimchunger Tribal Council (YTC) was intentionally trying to "provoke and create situations" by inviting the state government to hold state road show at Pungro.
The council further appealed to deputy commissioner, Kiphire and state government not to organize state road show, coinciding with the Metemnyu festival at Pungro in order to "conserve peace and tranquility" and to avert all forms of "unwanted elements and confrontations."
Meanwhile, the TTC has appealed to the state government and all tribal Hohos under the aegis of ENPO, to intervene and deliver justice on "long pending issues" between Tikhir and Yimchungers.
The statement also stated that upon failure to take up the matter, the TTC would be compelled to take up its own course of action.
It further cautioned that any eventualities arising out of the issue(s) would be solely held responsible by the government.
It may be mentioned that the Yimchungrü Tribal Council (YTC) had recently criticized USLB for opposing the proposed state road show at Pungro, coinciding Yimchungrü Metümneo festival, and affirmed that the event would be conducted “at any cost”.
