Students hoisted black flags in all the colleges that come under the jurisdiction of Dibrugarh University on Saturday, demanding a rollback of the hike in its fee structure and the ouster of its vice-chancellor.
Students of colleges in all the seven districts of Upper Assam — Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji — decided to join the agitation in response to a call by the All Assam Students Union, which is spearheading the agitation along with the Dibrugarh University Post-Graduate Students Union (DUPGSU).
Students from Moran College and Moran Women’s College took out a rally in the Dibrugarh district town under the aegis of the Moran Regional Students Union of AASU to demand immediate rollback of the hike and removal of vice-chancellor Kandarpa Kumar Deka. Carrying banners, festoons and placards, they shouted slogans and staged a demonstration in front of the circle officer’s office at Moran. They submitted a memorandum to Assam Governor and chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Governor J.B. Patnaik, through circle officer Sanjib Badhoi.
“We have also demanded withdrawal of the cases pending against five students of Dibrugarh University and lifting of the dissolution order of DUPGSU,” Jadunath Puri, the president of Moran Regional Students Union of AASU, said.
AASU assistant general secretary Rituparna Baruah said in Dibrugarh that no discussions would be held with the “arrogant VC” who had termed the students “miscreants”.
