North East Support Centre (NESC), New Delhi Tuesday condemned the Connaught Place Restrobar, “molestation” incident in New Delhi where one female, a resident of Manipur was allegedly molested by the manager.
NESC spokesperson, Madhu Chandra in a statement demanded the law enforcing authorities to act and punish the guilty. It is a panic spread across Delhi and NCR among Northeastern girls working in unorganized sectors, it stated.
According to sources, NESC said Ms. Archana (name changed) from Manipur was working at Restrobar at L Block Connaught Place, New Delhi for the past three months.
On August 29, she alleged that her boss tried to molest her after he found her watching television during duty hours. The manager first abused sexually, pushed her from the chair and attacked with fork before trying to molest her. “I was alone on the first floor of the restrobar when he attacked me with a fork. I suffered bruises,” the woman told police. She added that when she raised an alarm other employees of the restrobar rushed to her rescue.
Additional commissioner (New Delhi) Shankar Dash said, “As it is a case of molestation against a girl from northeast, we are treating the case seriously.”
Chandra said until and unless exemplary action was taken against perpetuators, the gender-based violence faced by the people from North East India will not stop.
“What worries more now apart from racial/gender-based violence is the fear of human trafficking targeted North East girls, particularly related to upcoming Commonwealth Games in October,” he said.
NESC also appealed public to be aware of false promised jobs offered to young girls and boys and free education for children.
Soon a helpline number will be provided, related to gender-based violence and human trafficking, Chandra said.
