Bano stresses on promoting gender equality

Additional chief secretary and Commissioner Banuo Z. Jamir on Wednesday stressed on the need to promote gender equality in today’s modern world.
Speaking at the 66th anniversary of ‘Khonoma Rüffüno’ at the Heritage, Kohima, Banuo reiterated that 66 years ago, Khonoma Rüffüno had women pioneers such as Rano Shaiza and Sokhrieno. She congratulated the present team of office bearers which included five women and added that women should not just be included as passive members but should be actively engaged in decision-making as well.
She also praised the unique features of Khonoma village with its terraced fields, stone work; conservation of forests, flora and fauna, including the cultivation of alder trees with accompanying soil conservation and said beautiful features of Kohnoma was due to the intellectual and scientific knowledge and talents of forefathers.
She went on to say that the village going ‘Green’ was not due to a programme of the Government, but which had been adopted much before government programme. Earlier, she distributed regular awards, while the special award was presented by Dr. Kedozeto Punyü, President of Khonoma Rüffüno Nagaland.
As per tradition, on this occasion, special acknowledgement and recognition was given to the members who excelled in various fields. This year’s awards were given to 19 persons. among them were, Megolhuto Savio Meyase, for excellence in Academic performance; Megosier Khate, for excellence in Sports (Wrestling), and Nikesono Kevichüsa, for securing top position in the NCS combined examinations 2010.
This year, for the first time, Special Award of Khonoma Rüffüno Nagaland was given to four senior members to recognize and acknowledge their selfless contribution to the overall human resource development. The first-time Award was given to Razhukhrielie Kevichüsa, IAS; Niketu Iralu; Dr. Rüünguto Zinyü and Dr. Niu Kuotsu.
Other highlights of the programme included a talk on ‘Concern for the youth and their responsibilities today’ by Keviyachü Liegise, (Sr. Academic Officer, SCERT) special songs, and election and induction of the new team of office bearers for 2010-2012 term. The day-long programme ended with a community feast.
The get-together function was chaired by Akho Savino, President of Khonoma Rüffüno, Kohima unit.
