An enterprising farmer Angshei Phom of Yongam village under Longleng district who had been cultivating Cardamom-‘Queen of spices’ since 2004, invented the local indigenous tool christened cardamom harvesting tool.
The tool is a simple smutted iron rod of 3-5mm diameter with a length of 1-1.5 ft, attached to a wooden handle with its mouth plated curved and spitted into two. This simple inexpensive tool can harvest 60-70 kgs of cardamom a day in comparison to the traditional hand picking which gathers just 20-30 kgs in a day Angshei Phom is one of the most successful Cardamom farmers in the entire region. He turns his vision to wealth and his faith to fortune.
62 year old Angshei Phom cultivated cardamom initially with 10,000 suckers provided by land resource development department, Longleng. Angshei Phom who credits his success to department of land resource, adopted a unique style of intercropping Cardamom with upland paddy in Jhum field in the initial years covering about 2 Ha.
His hard labor finally paid off with a return of Rs 2400/- from a mere 20 kgs of dried capsule prices @Rs 60/- in Longleng town in the year 2006. The tool which Angshei invented became a source of income for livelihood; it has not only caught the attention of farmers and surrounding villagers but also Church organizations.
In the year 2007, he fetched a sum of Rs 62,500/- by selling 1250 kgs of dried capsules @ Rs 60/- per kgs in Longleng and Aboi in Mon district and 50,000 suckers @ Rs 1 per suckers to the department, church and farmers for plantation.
The proud farmer has earned 3-4 lakhs in these few years only by selling suckers and at present has more than 10 Ha of cardamom plantation and is still expanding. Church and farmers attracted by his farm have started undergoing large scale plantation by buying suckers from this field.
