Reacting to the ten-day deadline set by Hills Area Truck Owners Association to the authorities to repair deplorable road condition and bridges under Tuensang, executive engineer (PWD) national highway, division-III executive engineer Charlie Imchen clarified that it was technically impossible as with the onset of monsoon the bituminous work cannot be carried at present.
However, the engineer stated department had already initiated and given proposal to the higher authority for construction of new concrete bridge and work for normal stretch of road under the division had been allotted to contractors and have directed contractors to continue their assigned work on emergency basis. Stating that trucks carrying heavy loads beyond its limited capacity also contributed to damages of weak bridges, the engineer said a transom was damaged at bridge over Dikhu river (12/40 km) by truck bearing registration number ASF-03F 1479 on July 17, carrying 8MTS as reported by the driver, but was actually carrying 15MTS excluding the weight of the vehicle.
The Engineer has further requested all heavy vehicles to adhere to the permitted load carrying capacity as to avoid any shortcomings till new bridges were constructed.
