Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas observed
Department of new and renewable energy with the rest of the country, celebrated Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas- Renewable Energy Day, on Friday.
The day long program started with a rally from Indoor Badminton Stadium to Kohima local ground, which was flagged off by commissioner and secretary, new & renewable energy and information and public relations, M. K Mero. Despite the rain, a total number of 163 students from 15 different schools and colleges and officials of the New and Renewable Department took part in the rally, holding banners and placards displaying renewable energy slogans.
While delivering a short speech before flagging off the rally, Mero said renewable energy technologies were clean sources of energy that had a much lower environmental impact than conventional energy. He encouraged the gathering to rely more on renewable energy because renewable energy would not run out, while other sources of energy were finite and would deplete some day.
An effective and far reaching awareness campaign about renewable energy is organized to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and visionary leader, late Rajiv Gandhi as Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas on August 20 every year since 2004 all over the country. The day was appropriate to advocate renewable energy since Rajiv Gandhi was a keen enthusiast of scientific advancement that would enable India to leap into the 21st century.
