Around two weeks since the suspension of the Imphal Municipal Council (IMC), the council chairperson, M Ranisana Devi defended charges hurled on her by the government while issuing the suspension order on August 9 last.
Government had charged IMC of being indulged in gross financial irregularities and misuse of funds to the tune of crores of rupees, abuse of power and administrative lapses based on the report of a committee of officers, who investigated into the administrative functioning and financial management of the council.
The chairperson while addressing the inaugural function of a bus waiting shed in the city, Sunday said that all the allegations were baseless and was a conspiracy of Manipur Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) and some other agencies who wanted to take a major share in the implementation of the various central sponsored schemes under urban development projects in Imphal.
Defending the charges, chairperson said that government had taken the step only in favour of some vested interest groups as huge fund was going to be sanctioned for developing Imphal as a mega city under central government approved implementation of Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission.
Earlier, the additional secretary, MAHUD, Government of Manipur, M Joy Singh had placed the IMC under suspension for a period of six months with effect from August 9 based on the report submitted by committee of officers who submitted a list of the financial irregularities, misuse of funds, abuse of power and administrative lapses by the IMC.
